Eyeblack Odyssey argues that college football is good. In honor of that thought, I’ll be posting a series of daily blog entries that celebrate the good in the sport. I have no idea how far I’ll take this, but for now, let us all bask in the awesome.
Let us all bask in … Petrino getting canned
By many accounts, Bobby Petrino is not an especially nice or ethical person. So I understand some people are going to take great Schadenfreude in his firing.
That’s cool.
What it does for me isn’t so much about enjoying his suffering, but more importantly about the message here, that this coach wasn’t bigger than his football program, his school, or his state government.
Are you taking notes, Penn State?
I have made no secret of the fact that I believe the pedestal for many of these guys has gotten too big, and that some of the sport’s fans are a little off the reservation when it comes to hero worship. So it’s extremely comforting to me when an athletic department takes a rare stand against corruption. It reminds me that we can find good in the midst of bad.
So props to Arkansas on this — you’ve done right by the sport.
