To the top!: Today’s reason college football is good

Southern Miss

They may look miserable and rain-soaked (and they are), but they can yell "To the top!" with the best of them.

Eyeblack Odyssey argues that college football is good. In honor of that thought, I’ll be posting a series of daily blog entries that celebrate the good in the sport. I have no idea how far I’ll take this, but for now, let us all bask in the awesome.

Let us all bask in … To the top!

One of the weirdest things I encountered on my journey around the football South was the insistence of every Southern Miss fan I encountered to mutter/say/scream “To the top!” at every available occasion to them.

[Southern Miss touchdown]

“To the top!”

[Southern Miss tackle]

“To the top!”

[Lightning bolt crash]

“To the top!”

[Robin Gibb dies]

“To the top!”

It was all rather unsettling, because, well, I had no idea what it meant.

And I still don’t. This here says it’s something about the fight song and an armadillo in an elevator, but really, all of that is just fluff. The truth of the matter is that no matter the origins, the phrase suggests Southern Miss should go to the top.

But the top of what?

I don’t believe the rest of us are meant to know…
